As a school employee, one of the best perks is summer break. 8 weeks to rest, recharge, and maybe catch up on sleep we likely missed during the school year. But what if I told you that break could also be the perfect time to make extra money… without sacrificing your sanity or summer?
This summer, I started helping out a local cleaning business, and to my surprise, I’m actually making more than I do during the school year.
Why It Works for School Staff
We’re already used to routines, working on our feet, and being efficient with our time. Those same skills translate perfectly into cleaning homes, rentals, or offices. Cleaning isn’t just a job. Really it’s a workout, a stress reliever, and honestly, a chance to work in peace (no tiny hands grabbing your legs every five minutes!).
Plus, most cleaning gigs offer flexible hours, meaning you can still enjoy beach days, cookouts, and that afternoon nap you’ve been dreaming about since September.
Other Summer Job Ideas for Teachers & School Staff:
- Pet sitting or dog walking
- House sitting for vacationers
- Running errands for busy families or second homeowners
- Tutoring or summer camps
- Selling digital printables or lesson plans online
- Freelance editing or writing
- Hosting summer workshops for kids (crafts, science, reading, etc.)
- Helping a landscaping or property management company
- Working nights or at events
- Photography
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with soaking up every ounce of rest during break. But if you’re like me,wanting to feel productive, keep some structure, or give your savings a boost, picking up a side gig during the summer can actually feel really good.
And hey, it’s nice to go back in the fall with a little extra cushion in the bank (or finally buy that wishlist item without stressing, or heck even start your Christmas shopping early!).
